Yes, Emma M. Nutt was a real person
She's famous for being the first female telephone operator. Initially, the phone company hired young boys - with disastrous results. They fought with each other and were unruly and rude to customers. On September 1, 1878, Emma was hired (along with her sister). Her career saying "operator" lasted 33 years. I wonder how many wrong numbers that included.

Just for today I plan to answer my phone "Operator, how may I help you?" to honor poor almost forgotten Emma.
